The Sports Complex at YZD will be a year-round sports destination on the 370-acre site of the former Downsview Airport in North York, Ontario-based sports developer and operator, Field Recreation Inc., announced this week.
Expected to open this winter, the facility will provide indoor and outdoor space for athletes, families, schools and community organizations across Toronto, Field Recreation said.
Developed and operated by Field Recreation Inc. in partnership with Premier Racquet Clubs, North Toronto Soccer, Community Sports Partners, JAM Sports, and SportStars, The Sports Complex at YZD will become one of the city’s most comprehensive multi-sport facilities, Field Recreation said.
The facility will offer more than 200,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor sports and recreation space.
Features will include two full-size soccer fields and a 50,000-square-foot racquet sports facility. The facility will serve everyone from first-time players and recreational users to competitive athletes, sports organizations, schools and community groups.
The soccer facilities will include two 75,000-square-foot soccer fields, with North Toronto Soccer as the fields’ anchor tenant, one year-round domed field, one outdoor field and professional-grade soccer turf.
Operated by Premier Racquet Clubs, the 50,000-square-foot racquet sports facility will include six doubles tennis courts, one singles tennis court and six permanently lined pickleball courts across two hybrid courts.
The facility is designed to meet growing demand for high-quality sports infrastructure in this part of Toronto, just north of the 401 and Yorkdale Shopping Centre, while creating a year-round hub for competition, training, recreation and community play, Field Recreation said.
“Across Toronto, demand for sports fields and court space continues to outpace supply,” said Robert Ortali, founder of Field Recreation Inc. “We believe in building active communities together. The Sports Complex at YZD was designed to help address the growing need for sports infrastructure while creating a place where people can connect, compete, stay active and belong.”
YZD is the transformation of the 370-acre former Downsview Airport lands, led by Toronto-based Northcrest Developments. Over the next 30 years, the project will include more than 35,000 new homes, seven million square feet of commercial and cultural spaces, and nearly 70 acres of parks and open spaces.
Live Nation built an open-air music venue with a capacity of 50,000 on the former airport lands, only to have it severely damaged in a storm in early September.
